“You used to drone on about herbs day and night, - but you never mentioned any plant called forkroot. I was sure you'd never heard of it until that woman mentioned it.
You've always tried to put the best face on things. If you' fell head first into a pigsty, you'd try to convince everybody you did it on purpose.”
~ Egwene al'Vere to Nynaeve al'Meara

Glossary
The Wheel of Time: "Time is a wheel with seven spokes, each spoke an Age. As the Wheel turns, the Ages come and go, each leaving memories that fade to legend, then to myth, and are forgotten by the time that Age comes again. The Pattern of an Age is slightly different each time an Age comes, and each time it is subject to greater change." (The Glossary, The Eye of the World)
Aes Sedai: (Pronounced EYEZ seh-DEYE) Aes Sedai means servant to all in the Old Tongue. They are wielders of the One Power who often act as advisors to rulers, and have a reputation for “meddling in the affairs of nations”. Aes Sedai are only women since saidin was tainted, and have exceptionally long lives, as well as an appearance of agelessness. Aes Sedai train at the White Tower in Tar Valon. They are first novices and after extensive training are raised to Aceepted, and then Aes Sedai. This is often known as being raised to or attaining the shawl, since Aes Sedai wear a shawl the colour of the Ajah they join. Sedai is commonly used as an honorific.
Aes Sedai are bound by three oaths they swear on the Oath Rod “To speak no word that is not true, to make no weapon for one man to kill another and t never to use the One Power as a weapon except against Darkfriends or Shadowspawn, or in the last extreme of defending ones own life, that of one’s Warder, or that of another sister.” Aes Sedai are led by the Amyrlin Seat, who is elected for life.
Ajahs: All Aes Sedai belong to a specific society, known as an Ajah, each of which their own designated colour. The different Ajahs specialise in different ares, having their own philosophy and ideas concerning the use of the One Power and purpose of being an Aes Sedai. There are seven official Ajahs: Blue, Red, White, Green, Brown, Yellow, Gray. The Black Ajah is unofficial and its existence is generally denied – it comprises of Aes Sedai from the other Ajahs who have foresworn their oaths and serve the Dark One. The Amyrlin Seat is considered as belonging to all Ajahs and yet none.
Tar Valon: A island city, Tar Valon is the Aes Sedai’s centre, where the White Tower and the Amrylin Seat are located.
Wilders: Wilder is the term given to a woman who learns how to channel without any teaching. Only one in four wilders survive without training, most either burning themselves out or dying if they are not discovered. Most wilders develop a block which interferes with their conscious control, and non-standard methods of channelling that are difficult to correct. Due to this, there is often a dislike of wilders present among Aes Sedai.
Warder: A warder is warrior, traditionally male, who is bonded to Aes Sedai and protects her from physical dangers. The bonding is of the One Power and allows the Warder and Aes Sedai to draw on each others strength, as well as sense each others’ emotions and direction/distance. The Warder gains various other abilities, including quick healing, the capability to go without food, water or rest for long amounts of time and can sense the taint of the Dark One. The bond generally lasts until death. Aes Sedai are aware of the instant and manner of their Warder’s death, and consequently suffer from prolonged grief; most Warders die avenging the death of their Aes Sedai, and do not survive the experience of a ‘mental death’. Most Aes Sedai only have one Warder at a time, but the Green Ajah believe in bonding more than one, and the Red, none. Warders are also known as Gaidin, which means “Brother to Battles” in the Old Tongue.
Bonding is generally voluntary, and bonding without consent is viewed as rape. Bonds can be released, but are rarely done so.
The Great Serpent: An ancient symbol of a serpent eating its own tail, the Great Serpent represents both time and eternity. Aes Sedai (and Accepted) wear this symbol on a ring; it is often used to prove their status.
The True Source: This is the driving force of the Universe, which is responsible for turning the Wheel of Time. The male half, saidin, is channelled by men and the female half, saidar, by women. Both halves simultaneously work both against and with each other. They are pronounced seye-DAHR and seye-DEEN. Saidin is fouled by the Dark One’s taint.
The One Power: This is the power that is drawn from the True source. A small minority of people (no more than 3% of the population) have the ability to touch the True Source and learn to channel; an even smaller number have this ability ‘inborn’, which means they will learn to channel without instruction, and generally without knowledge of what they are doing. Without learning control, death is inevitable. The ability to channel generally becomes present in late adolescence or early adulthood. In early adulthood, those who channel generally slow in showing affects of aging.
The Five Powers: The five powers are the threads to the One Power, and their names (Earth, Air, Fire, Water and Spirit) indicate what can be achieved with them. Those who can channel can grasp some threads better than others; the extent varying between individuals. Traditionally Fire and Earth are seen as male powers, while Wind and Water are viewed as female.
Channelling: 1. (verb) To control the flow of the One Power 2. (noun) The act of controlling the flow of the One Power.
Wisdom: This is a position of authority for a woman equal to or above that of the village’s Mayor, with whom she often conflicts with. The woman is chosen by the Woman’s Circle due to her knowledge of things such as healing, foretelling the weather and common good sense. Wisdoms generally keep the position until they die.
Women’s Circle: A group of elected (by the town’s women) women responsible for deciding matters deemed women’s responsibility. The Women’s Circle have equal authority to the Village Council and are traditionally in conflict with them.
Village Council: A governing body in the village of men elected by Townsmen and headed by the Mayor, they are responsible for deciding regarding matters that impact the village, and negotiating when required with the councils of other villages.
The Great Blight: This is a region to the far north that has been corrupted by the Dark One and is the haunt of his creatures.
The Borderlands: These four countries, Saldaea, Arafel, Kandor and Shienar, border the Great Blight
Malkier: Malkier was one of the Borderlands before it was consumed by the Blight. Its sign is a golden crane in flight.
