He had always said he was wedded with death. Now a new bride had captured his eyes, though he was blind to it. He thought he still stood strong behind his walls, but Nynaeve had laced bridal flowers in his hair. Would he still find himself able to court death so blithely?

al'Lan Mandragoran

Read about Lan Mandragoran. The first few paragraphs deal with Lan's appearance, character and background; later paragraphs are a chronology of sorts and contain spoilers.

Lan was tall and hard, broad-shouldered, with blue eyes like frozen mountain lakes, and he moved with a deadly grace that made the sword on his hip seem a part of him. It was not that he seemed merely capable of violence and death; this man had tamed violence and death and kept them in his pocket...

Lan was born in 953 NE. His name is pronounced
AHL'LAN man-dra-GOR-an. The Aiel call him Aan'allein which means "a man who is an entire nation" or in the Old Tongue, and his Malkier title is Lord of the Seven Towers. In the Borderlands he is known as Dai Shan, the Diademed Battle Lord of Malkier, which is what his parents named him when they consecrated him as the next King of the Malkieri, or the Uncrowned King. He has travelled under the name of Andra. The al' on the front of his name is the Malkieri honorific for king. The sign of Malkier is a Golden Crane in flight.

al'Lan Mandragoran is silent and hard, with a face like expressionless and emotionless stone. He is very tall, with broad shoulders and ice cold blue eyes. His hair, which is greying at his temples, falls to his shoulders and his held back with a hadori, a thin plaited strip of leather, a sign of manhood for men of Malkier. Lan is incredibly alert. He moves silently and his presence is often undetected. He is a deadly and skilled bladesmaster; his sword was made by Aes Sedai at the end of the Age of Legends. He does not tire easily, nor is he afraid of death. He obeys command unquestioningly. He rarely smiles or shows other signs of amusement or life, except around Nynaeve, and is in his mid-forties. His horse is a tall, black, fierce-eyed stallion called Mandarb, which means "Blade" in the Old Tongue. During New Spring, his horse is a bay stallion, Cat Dancer.

Lan is last surviving heir to the throne of Malkier, a kingdom which was swallowed by the Blight soon after he was born. His parents, al'Akir and el'Leanna Mandragoran swore the ancient oath of Malkieri rulers on his behalf and in his name - "To stand against the Shadow so long as iron is hard and stone abides. To defend the Malkieri while one drop of blood remains. To avenge what cannot be defended..." - and he was carried from Malkier by twenty of the Kingdom’s best swordsmen. He was brought up the five surviving swordsmen in the Royal Palace in Shienar, amongst those who still held to the ways of Malkier. Lan left the palace to begin his private war against the Shadow in the Blight when he was sixteen, and ten years later, of the swordsmen who raised him, only Bukama is still alive.

Lan refuses to lead other men into the Blight, although he is not opposed to them accompanying him. He denies his titles, yet in the Borderlands he is called the Uncrowned, and if ever he raised the Golden Crane of Malkier, an army would come to follow.

While travelling, Lan and Bukuma encountered Moiraine Damodred, who had just become an Aes Sedai and was travelling under the assumed name of Alys. Lan threw her into a pond for attempting to separate him from his sword, and at night she channeled the pond onto his head in retaliation. After a battle with members of the Black Ajah, Moiraine confides her mission to Lan and he agrees to be bonded as her Warder.

Lan is with Moiraine when she arrives at Emond’s Field, and travels in the company of the Emond Fielder’s for some time. He tutors in advises Rand, teaching Rand how to use his heron blade sword and how to act like a lord. (Although Moiraine attributes this to Nynaeve’s influence.) He continues to show Rand regard, despite recognising that Rand is dangerous. Despite falling in love with Nynaeve, Lan insists that their love cannot be because he is wedded to his private war with the shadow, and continues to travel with Moiraine.

Lan is unable to avenge Moiraine’s death (generally Warders die in this process following the death of an Aes Sedai they are bonded to) since Moiraine arranged to for his bond to pass to another to avoid what she saw as Lan’s unnecessary death. Lan is Compelled to seek out Myrelle, an Aes Sedai of the Green Ajah who has two Warders who previously were bonded to Aes Sedai who died and who plans to pass Lan’s bond to Nynaeve. She is unable to re-instil a desire to live in Lan, and Lan is sent by Egwene to protect Nynaeve.

Lan rescues Nynaeve when the Forsaken, Moghedien, who holds a strong personal hatred of Nynaeve, blasts the ship she was on. Nynaeve and Lan marry in a Windfinder ceremony, and he acts as her Warder, despite that he is bonded to another.

The only book with any sections from Lan's point of view is New Spring.

“You can never know everything, and part of what you know is always wrong. Perhaps even the most important part. A portion of wisdom lies in knowing that. A portion of courage lies in going on anyways.”

“Death comes sooner or later to everyone unless they serve the Dark One, and only fools are willing to pay that price.”

“My humility is honed to razor sharpness. You never let it grow too dull.”
